Tokyo Ghoul is the hit anime series based on the manga of the same name. In Tokyo Ghoul, we follow the life of Ken Kannacky who has recently become a kind of ghoul-human hybrid after receiving a transplant of Ghoul organs while in an accident. Tokyo Ghoul Root A is the second season of this series and continues on almost exactly after the end of the first season. However, it seems as though there is a shift in tone, storytelling and directing. It is released by Madman Entertainment here in Australia and the English adaptation is done by Funimation. Right off the bat, Tokyo Ghoul’s story throws us straight into the action with the resolution to the Police vs. Ghouls … Continue reading
Shingeki no Kyojin – Attack On Titan, if you haven’t heard of it, is one of the largest Japanese anime and manga franchises on the market at the moment. The franchise is about humanity being on the brink of extinction thanks to relentless attacks by a mysterious enemy, known as Titans, for generations. To repel the titans, humanity have built several walls around their territory and have developed some rather unique weaponry that excel in butchering these foes. The A.O.T / Attack On Titan – Wings of Freedom video game follows the storyline of the anime adaptation of the popular manga series, and it somehow is way better than expected. If you’ve seen the anime or read the manga, the … Continue reading
If there is one world to describe Flowers -Le volume sur printemps-, it would be beautiful. Developed by Innocent Grey and published by JAST USA, the yuri visual novel tells the story of Suoh Shirahane, an introverted young girl who starts attending Saint Angraecum Academy, an all girls school isolated from society. While there, she becomes good friends with her fellow classmates, but she also discovers a mystery that needs to be solved. The story and characters are likable, the art style is beautiful and the music is excellent. There are, however, a few issues with the translation, but that can be fixed in the future. The story is centered around Suoh Shirahane, who is quite introverted and shy. She … Continue reading
Rage of Bahamut: Genesis is the anime series loosely based on the Mobile CCG, Rage of Bahamut, published by Mobage and developed by Cygames. The story follows the character Favaroooooooooooooooo! as he travels with a half-demon named Amira on a quest to find the land of Helheim. As an adventure anime, Rage of Bahumut has a lot of strengths, and as a comedy, it somehow works. I had first heard about Rage of Bahamut back in 2012 when it was a new Mobage game, back when I was playing Monster Rancher on my old Galaxy S2. The company, Mobage, have an English language version of their game service (and in my opinion, it’s a lot more robust than the Japanese … Continue reading
Seraph of the End is an anime which plays it safe. In a post apocalyptic world, an orphan by the name of Yu has a desire for revenge against vampires for killing the other orphans in his orphanage. He escapes the underground city of the vampires and is found by members of the Moon Demon Company, which is a division of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. While it is told well, the story and characters are all run of the mill, generic tropes and cliches rehashed in a different way. The first half of the story is all about setting up the world, the characters and the overarching plot. The protagonist is Yuichiro Hyakuya, a sixteen year old orphan hell … Continue reading
Supipara is a kinetic-style Visual Novel from developer Minori that focuses on a highschool student named Yukinari Sanada that has returned home to his hometown of Kamakura City due to his mother coming out of a multi-year coma. Much like any Japanese developed Visual Novel, Supipara has all of the bells-and-whistles of voice acting, animations and a fun story. Is this for everyone? Maybe. There are a few themes that only older audiences could appreciate to the fullest. The story in Supipara begins with Yukinari arriving into his hometown of Kamakura City and meeting with his rather strange cousin, Sakura. While here, we quickly learn that their relationship is kinda strange in that Yukinari used to live with Sakura briefly … Continue reading
Hiromu Arakawa, best known for her work on Fullmetal Alchemist, has released a new manga series called Arslan Senki. This manga series has since been adapted into an anime series by the same name, but is released as The Heroic Legend of Arslan here in the western market. The story follows the young prince of Pars, Arslan, during a time of strife and war in his kingdom. Considering the story is set over 52 episodes, and that this collection only covers 13 of those, some people might find that this particular section isn’t as meaty as most anime series at this point. The story begins with our Prince, Arslan, being instructed in the ways of the sword. But first, before … Continue reading
